The Lancet Commission on Women, Power, and Cancer addresses urgent questions at the intersection of social inequality, cancer risk and outcomes, and the status of women in society. The Commission has identified key performance indicators to evaluate the global implementation of the ten key recommendations for impactful and lasting change, as proposed in the 2023 Commission report. This London Global Cancer Week session will introduce those indicators and discuss opportunities and challenges of implementation, as well as monitoring and evaluating progress.

The topic of women and cancer spans broad terrain, beyond women's cancers and the biomedical aspects of any type of cancer that women in all their diversities might experience. It is inclusive of the ways in which sex and gender influence exposures to cancer risk factors, interactions with the cancer health system, and specific challenges faced by health-care professionals, advocates, and caregivers. In all these domains, women experience gender bias, and are subject to overlapping forms of discrimination, such as due to age, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, and gender identity, that render them structurally marginalised. These myriad factors can intersect and restrict a woman's rights and opportunities to avoid modifiable cancer risks and impede their ability to seek and obtain a prompt diagnosis and quality cancer care. At the same time, they serve to unfairly burden and perpetuate an unpaid cancer caregiver workforce that is predominantly female, and hinder women's professional advancement as leaders in cancer
research, practice, and policy making.

Hosted by The Eastern Mediterranean NCD Alliance (EM-NCDA), this convening aims to spotlight women’s cancers, leverage collective efforts to steer discussions towards actionable outcomes, and advocate for gender-sensitive approaches in closing the gap between policy development and implementation in the EMR. Drawing upon the IHE-IAPO Breast Cancer Report and the Lancet Commission on Women, Power, and Cancer, this gathering also aims to galvanize the EMR political commitment and cooperation in ensuring women's cancer remains a central focus on the agenda of the upcoming UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs in 2025.

The NIH Sex and Gender Differences in Cancer Virtual Workshop Series will feature four 3-hour virtual sessions on different aspects of this topic between February and June 2024.
This series of free virtual workshops will bring together those that are interested in sex and gender differences in cancer in the areas of basic biology, genomics, epigenetics, immunology, clinical/translational science, as well as population science, to not only learn about the latest research findings but to also identify gaps in our knowledge, identify potential collaborative opportunities, and learn best practices for methodology and reporting.
Commission co-chair Dr. Ophira Ginsburg will speak at the June workshop.
