The Lancet Commission on women, power, and cancer honors the untimely passing of our dear advisor and friend, Emerita Professor Lynette Denny.

Lyn embodied the spirit of our commission, encouraging all of us to embrace our power and use it wisely, as she did, to overcome all forms of discrimination that can undermine the rights and aspirations of girls and women everywhere. Lyn was a brilliant scientist, pioneering approaches to cervical cancer screening that no doubt has saved many thousands of women’s lives in South Africa and globally. She was a beloved teacher and mentor, but above all, she was a remarkable human being with an indomitable spirit. Humble, funny, Lyn laughed easily and often, frequently at herself, and at life‘s many ironies. She taught many of us how to live with grace, and how to keep pushing against biases, paving the way for so many girls and women who will lead and follow along the trail she blazed so brightly.

Lyn was a truly remarkable soul. Fierce in her advocacy, gentle in her compassion and acceptance of life’s challenges…with the greatestspirit and warmest heart. A mentor of mentors. We will remember and continue her legacy. ❤️❤️❤️
